Held at the Zimbabwe College of Music from July 8 to July 18, the Next Level Academy featured a series of comprehensive workshops led by prominent American artist-educators. Participants, including dancers, MCs, beat-makers, and DJs, received in-depth training aimed at enhancing their artistic skills and entrepreneurial knowledge.
The American delegation comprised celebrated Hip Hop artists Lady Beast (Dancer), Dee-1 (MC), Nick Neutronz (DJ), and Krithi (Beatmaker), alongside Site Manager Aysha Upchurch. Joining them for part of the program was Ugandan Hip Hop entrepreneur and Next Level alumni Mark Kaweesi, who enriched the dance classes and entrepreneurship discussions with his expertise.
One of the program’s standout events was the entrepreneurship day, featuring insights from industry leaders such as Enia Zimunya and Brian Ngona from the Marketers Association of Zimbabwe, Hip Hop activist Naboth Rizzla, Zim Hip Hop Awards CEO Aldrian “Beefy” Harrison, music executive Phil Chard, and creative entrepreneur Nomvula Mhambi. Their sessions provided invaluable guidance on the business aspects of the music industry, empowering artists to build sustainable careers.”
Community outreach was a significant component of the program, with a notable event held at Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton. This creative space, founded by the late music icon Oliver Mtukudzi, served as a hub for local artists to engage, learn, and showcase their talents. Another highlight was the Jibilika Cypher at Skug Barn in Harare, where participants united in a vibrant display of Hip Hop culture.
Specialized workshops further enriched the academy’s offerings. Saleem Reshamwala conducted a videography workshop at Studio Moto, while Krithi led a Women’s beatmaking workshop coordinated by Chioneso Rutsito. These sessions underscored the program’s commitment to diverse representation and skill-building within the industry.
The grand finale at the 7 Arts Theatre was attended by the newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Ambassador Tremont, who commended the participants and organizers for their efforts in fostering cross-cultural understanding and creative collaboration. The showcase highlighted the immense talent and growth of the participants, culminating in a night of unforgettable performances.
“The Next Level Hip Hop Exchange Program has been a transformative experience for all involved,” said Aysha Upchurch, Site Manager. “The collaboration between American and Zimbabwean artists has not only elevated their artistic skills but also built bridges of understanding and friendship.”
